Managing Rising Utility Bills: Practical Tips for Households

We regret to inform you that our monthly utility bills are not looking favorable.

Between April and June 2026, households in four-room HDB flats will see their monthly bills increase by approximately $1.96 on average. Additionally, gas tariffs are also expected to rise during this period.

Although this adjustment is relatively small, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) has indicated that more significant increases may occur later in 2026, influenced by escalating global fuel prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions that impact energy supply.

Singapore's heavy reliance on imported natural gas for electricity means that global events, such as conflicts that hinder fuel supply, can significantly affect our utility expenses at home.

With prices anticipated to remain unstable due to the situation in the Middle East, households may encounter increasingly unpredictable utility bills in the near future.

As anyone who has dealt with bills knows, even minor quarterly increases can accumulate over time, making it crucial to monitor your energy consumption closely.

To mitigate the effects of rising energy costs (while combating climate change), consider implementing these practical strategies to reduce your electricity bills:

1. Switch to LED Lighting

LED lights can save up to 75% of energy while lasting 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

Although the initial purchase cost is slightly higher than regular bulbs, the long-term savings make this investment worthwhile.

2. Invest in Energy-Efficient Appliances

Replacing home appliances with energy-efficient models is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.

While many people gravitate towards the cheapest options, investing in higher-quality products—especially daily-use items like refrigerators or air conditioners—can yield better long-term savings.

To identify appliances that consume less energy, look for the National Environment Agency's (NEA) green tick system. The more ticks an appliance has, the more energy-efficient it is, translating to lower electricity bills.

For instance, an air conditioner with 5 ticks can save you 33% on your electricity bills compared to one with only 3 ticks.

3. Power Down Appliances at Night

Many assume that turning off appliances means they aren’t consuming electricity. However, devices in standby mode still use energy. To minimize energy waste, unplug devices from the socket, especially at night while you sleep.

4. Wash Clothes in Cold Water

Contrary to popular belief, washing clothes in hot water only kills bacteria if the water is boiling. Washing in cold or room temperature water is gentler on fabrics and can significantly reduce your electricity usage.

In fact, using cold water can save up to 90% of the energy needed to operate the washing machine.

5. Optimize Your Fridge's Position

Did you know that simply adjusting your fridge's position can save you money?

Moving the fridge just an inch away from the wall can reduce its energy use by up to 40% since the coils have room to cool properly. This also makes it easier to clean the condenser coils, preventing the fridge from overworking to stay cool.

Moreover, place the fridge in a cool area of the kitchen, away from direct sunlight, as added heat forces the compressor to work harder, increasing energy use and potentially shortening the fridge's lifespan.
